Description
The heroine of the story, Ann Garland, has three suitors: John Loveday, trumpeter in a British regiment, who was honest and loyal; his brother Bob, a merchant seaman womanizer, and Festus Derriman, the cowardly son of the local squire. The novel is set in the context of the Napoleonic Wars and, it seems, Miss Garland had a predilection for the uniformed men. The two brothers participated in the war: while John fought with Wellington at the Battle of Waterloo, Bob was serving Horatio Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar.
