Description

On the heels of funk-punk contingents like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Fishbone, Bad Mutha Goose emerged from Texas with their own take on the style. Unfortunately, on this 1991 release, the band’s particular brand of lyrical positivism gets mired in a non-stop supply of plodding funk grooves. The group seems to favor an excess of vocal grandstanding and pat horn charts over the bottom-heavy half of the deep funk equation — ubiquitous slapped basslines a la Larry Graham alone do not constitute a good funk band. Here, the collective legacy of P-Funk, Sly Stone, and Curtis Mayfield gets glibly rehashed as the spastic soundtrack for a very unhip frat party. Even a halfway decent stab at Mayfield’s “Mighty Mighty” can’t salvage things. ~ Stephen Cook
